Sibu is an inland town, and the capital of Sibu District in Sibu Division, Sarawak. It is located at the confluence of the Rajang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometres from the ocean and approximately 183.3 kilometres east-north-east of the state capital Kuching. The population is dominated by Chinese especially the Fuzhou as well as indigenous Melanau, Malay, and Iban. The town population is estimated about 257,800 people in 2010.

Sibu is the main tourist gateway to the Upper Rajang River, with its small riverine towns and its many Iban and Orang Ulu longhouses.

Garden City to be, this is a quiet town along Rejang River. Sibu is one of the three towns in Malaysia which consists of a predominantly Foochow-Chinese population (Yong Peng in Johor and Sitiawan in Perak are the others). Sibu is not only famous for food (such as Kompia, Kampua and the like), but also boasts of being the hometown of a national patriot called Rosli Dhoby. The town symbol is the Swan. Unofficially, Sibu has been coined the 'Wild West' of Malaysia and the term has existed for more than 20 years. The nickname came about due to the nature of 'lawlessness' and frequent triad activities in Sibu.

Previously situated a good 10km from the town centre, the museum has now been given a new breath of life right smack in town at the newly built Sibu Heritage Centre. The entire first floor of the centre is now home to priceless artefacts and relics from various indigenous ethnic groups. You will definitely feel like you´ve been transported back in time when viewing these historical pieces filled with information of days gone by.

Named after the patron of this former hospital and built in 1930, it´s the first hospital built of this magnitude but now has been reduced to a small area at the town square. Visitors will be taken through a journey of medical history of the town with photographs, surgical equipments, evolution of the hospital uniforms and many more interesting information lined up at every corner of this museum.

One of the prominent landmarks in Sibu has an interesting story behind it. It is said to be miraculous as the statue of Tua Pek Kong itself somehow survived its trip by sea from China to Sibu unscathed through stormy weather, not to mention that this temple was the only left unscathed when a huge fire razed Sibu town at the turn of the century. After a series of reconstruction and additions to the temple, it now boasts a picturesque mini garden, an opera house and a seven storey pagoda, which makes a scenic picture by the Rejang River.

Impressively standing tall at 126 metres in the heart of Sibu is Sarawak´s tallest building. Completed in 2001, this landmark houses a shopping mall, hypermarkets, restaurants, a hotel and offices a plenty (private and government sectors). Its modern architecture has brought many design aficionados marvelling its simple yet notable motifs.

If you want to spend a leisurely day with nature then take a short drive out of town and come right to the largest park that Sibu has to offer. Take a stroll through its paths and unwind at the many gazebos dotting the park, which incidentally has won several national awards. Other activities offered are camping, barbequing and even an amphitheatre for events. It also hosts the annual Bukit Aup Jubilee Run organized by the Sarawak Tourism Board.

This is another heavenly sanctuary for those seeking to be one with nature. Trek along the ready-made paths through lush vegetation while occasionally bumping into wildlife which also leads to a nice cooling stream. On its bank is a two storey tower and it serves as a lookout point if you want an aerial view of the breathtaking park. There are shelters in between trails if you want to take a breather and take your time to take in your surroundings. A playground and general park area can be found as you enter the vicinity of the park.

The Lake Garden is unique in its own way as there is a vast lake within its premises. If you are partial to remote controlled powerboats then this is the perfect spot to test its power to the fullest as local enthusiasts love to race their boats here. It is also a favourite place for locals as it is complete with running tracks, boat house, habitat island, bird sanctuary, barbeque and picnic areas, splash pool, canteen and jetty.

This prominent landmark in Sibu is named as such because it literally marks the entry point into the town centre. Consisting of a long, wide walkway with a circular gazebo at the end, it is a common place for shutterbugs to snap away as it provides a plethora of photo opportunities with various angles. If you´re lucky you might catch an open-air concert or two while strolling along the walkway during the evening.

Enjoy an evening walking at a relaxing pace along the Rejang River while exploring the Chinese Garden, Mini Grandstand and well equipped children´s playground. Anglers can be seen casting their fishing rods and enjoying the unhurried environment and cool evening breeze.
