SABAH WETLAND
Community Based Educational Project On Wise Use of Mangrove

Sabah has the most extensive coverage of mangroves in Malaysia, which accounts for 59% of the country’s mangrove area (341,000 ha). While many countries have lost their mangrove forests, Sabah still maintains more than 90% of its original mangrove cover. Local communities at the coastal and mangroves area have been depending on its resources for their livelihoods. In addition, mangrove trees have been commercially exploited in Sabah as early as the 1900s mainly for its tannin from the bark, firewood and charcoal, and woodchips.

In line with SWCS’s objectives, continuous efforts are urgently needed to educate and create awareness among local communities and decision makers towards the importance of mangroves and its wise use. It is hope that by these efforts it can enhance their appreciation of wetlands and have better understanding of the relationship between mangroves and man. This in turn can ensure the sustainability of the livelihoods of the coastal communities and the well-being of the peoples of Sabah.

The project aims to disseminate knowledge on the importance of mangroves and its wise use to the local communities. Through this project, target groups will have better understanding of the mangrove ecosystems and its wise use. They will be provided with information on mangrove ecosystems and have hands-on experience in producing products from materials found in mangroves. It is hoped by understanding the production process, they will appreciate the nature resources, as well as respect the effort and skills of those communities that make the products. They are our future leaders, and so basic knowledge and skills should be sharpened in their young ages. The project can also provide an avenue for elders in the local communities to act as mentors, passing their knowledge and experiences to the next generation. This has the benefit to ensure that the local lore and culture will not be lost.
